The History of Janesville~ In 1833, the west bank of Rock River was surveyed by the US government after the end of the Black Hawk War. During the summer of 1835, the first settlers came to Janesville, incorporating it that same year. The county seat was established on the claim of Henry Janes' land in 1836. Janes applied for a post office on his land and volunteered himself Postmaster. After the approval from the Postmaster General, the office was named Janesville.
Heavy development began on the banks of Rock River and, with the success of agriculture and three rail lines being built, the growth of the City was propelled through the years to the Civil War.
For the first few decades after the turn of the century, the Janesville had a reputation for manufacturing enterprises, most notably fountain pens and automobiles. The biggest employers were Parker Pens and General Motors Chevrolet.
Today, with the recommendations of John Nolen, Rock River has become a major recreation corridor and the City has a thoroughfare system.
Education in Janesville~ Education is provided by the Janesville School District, serving grades K-12, with 13 elementary schools, two middle schools and one high school. Other parks include Rockport Park, which has several trails, Peace Park and three swimming pools. It is the largest park in Janesville real estate. Monterey Park offers amenities such as a bike trail, tennis courts, fast pitch softball diamonds, and Indian cave. High school football games and track meets are held at Monterey Stadium. On Mohawk Road and Palmer Drive is Palmer Park. Palmer Park is popular with the locals and includes the city wide bike trail, a 9-hole golf course, a dog park, tennis courts, softball fields, a pavilion, a wading pool, a large playground and Camden Park.
