Joseph Thiebault was the first white man to settle alongside the Winnebago in Rock County. He was a French trapper that came to the area to trade with the Indians in the 1820s. Thiebault had a cabin near the state line, right where Beloit City Hall now stands.
Another of the early pioneers and merchants was Caleb Blodgett. Blodgett first named the town New Albany, but it was renamed shortly after by a citizen committee. The name Beloit is believed to come from Balotte, a French word, meaning handsome ground. It was spelled after Detroit, since everyone saw it as a growth and trade symbol. The family of Emmanuel Craig were the town\'s first African-Americans. Craig was a coachman who arrived in the mid-1830s. The Craig family were some of the first to witness the creation of the township government, formed in 1842 and in 1846, the founding of Beloit College. In 1836, Beloit was officially founded and in 1846, it was incorporated as a village. In 1856, the town was incorporated as a city, and by 1929 the city had a Council-Manager form of government. In the early 1990s, the city under-went a major revitalization to the Rock River area, turning it into a world class recreation complex and open space. The area is used by most everyone year-round. The Downtown area was renovated and economic redevelopment continues, showing the rebirth of the city. Several new businesses have moved to the city and existing corporations are growing.
